Before the published manuscripts and the crossing of 21 territories, there was a boyhood in Cameroon, an abrupt departure into the unknown, and words carefully kept on folded paper.
Growing up between Douala and the western highlands of Cameroon, Kam Nganssoh Gildas learned early that stories were not mere entertainment. They were deeds of title to memory. In a home where spoken proverbs punctuated the evenings, the weight of ancestry lived in ordinary conversation.
Yet adulthood arrived with sudden, irreversible disruption. Sociopolitical instability and the narrowing avenues for free conscience forced a solitary departure. Leaving home was not an act of ambition or wandering curiosities; it was an urgent, singular choice to preserve life and intellectual integrity.

Transit without a map
What followed was a protracted, precarious odyssey through 21 national borders. Without legal recognition, transit is an endless exercise in patience and vigilance. It strips away titles, status, and material comfort, leaving only the essential self exposed to elements, desert crossings, and arbitrary authorities.
During the darkest stretches in maritime detention shelters and temporary desert encampments, Kam began writing every evening. Without reliable access to desks or electricity, notebooks became sanctuaries. Ink on recycled paper preserved the names of traveling companions who were lost, documented the dignity of the stateless, and resisted total spiritual erosion.
The birth of What Next? and KAM EMPIRE
Upon finally establishing residency, Kam chose not to soften the testimony for easy consumption. Instead, he organized his collected manuscripts into an unsparing yet profoundly humane literary work: WHAT NEXT? — Ce que le feu n'a pas détruit — Tome I.
